Viewing Humpback Whales in Costa Rica

Have you been considering taking a long vacation in Costa Rica? If you said "yes", then you might want to add a new experience to your "to-do" list. Humpback whale-watching is becoming a hugely popular tourist attraction and a very incredible experience to share with your friends and family back home.

Currently, there are over 50 tour companies in Costa Rica which offer trips to view the humpback whales. Last year saw over 100,000 visitors to Costa Rica specifically to see the beautiful whales. The best time to see the whales in their natural state is from August through October. The whales tend to travel to Costa Rican oceans in the winter months and head to the Northern waters in the summer months.

One great place to view the whales is in Ballena National Park. This park is located in the province of Puntarenas near Punta Uvita. The idea of the creation of this park is preserving the and protecting the whales during their mating periods. The humpback whale has been an endangered species since 1967, and their numbers are close to 10,000 around the world.

Costa Rica has seen an increase of whale-watching tourists in the last 10 years of around 74%. This represents the highest increase of all the Latin American countries. Costa Rica is definitely one of the best places to enjoy these massive beasts in their natural habitat.
