Positioned just about 90 kilometers north west of San Jose, Costa Rica, you can view the majestic Arenal Volcano. The Arenal Volcano is in the province of Alajuela in the little town of La Fortuna. Arenal Volcano is known as the most active volcano in Costa Rica. Specialists identify the Arenal Volcano as the youngest not to mention the most active volcanoes in all of Costa Rica.
It has been known as a volcano since the 1800’s, although in those times it was known as Costa Rica Volcano or Rio Frio. Some estimates state that the volcano is over 4000 years old. This portion of Costa Rica was unexplored up until 1937, when some explorers discovered the summit that very year.

The greatest explosion of the Arenal Volcano came about in 1968 after over 400 years of inactivity. That explosion destroyed the whole region of Arenal, and ended the lives of 87 individuals. It ended up affecting around 232 square kilometers and kept erupting for a number of days. The explosion was so intense that it formed three brand new craters. From the time of this infamous eruption, the volcano has continued to be active and one can view minor explosions very regularly, mostly at night.

The Arenal Volcano is known to be a very well-visited tourist spot, the majority of the tourists take pleasure in seeing the nocturnal explosions not to mention the famous hot springs. The most famous hot spring in La Fortuna is Tabacon. Arenal is one of seven Costa Rican volcanoes that can be visited any time of the year.
